Conservation is a technical activity towards historic buildings. This was a physical action to preserve the fabric and material of historic buildings. It is a procedure to avoid degradation and the action is aimed at prolonging the life of buildings. Although the meaning is easily achievable, in reality conservation has always been understood as renewal. Conservation is known as a process of curation or change management. It also includes maintenance and can, depending on the circumstances, consist of conservation, adaptation, reconstruction and restoration (Zalina, 2005). According to the International Council on Monuments and Sites or ICOMOS (1987) conservation is a process leading to the continued life of cultural property and its current and future use. It also means recalling the sense of the past and preserving, as far as possible, the original state or situation of the obtainable fabric. Furthermore, it also refers to supporting the conservation of those historic buildings that constitute the memory of humanity. Furthermore, according to (Zalina, 2005) conservation is a care that aims to protect the existing building from destruction or modification. This can be applied to all types of cultural, built and natural environments that have meaning, with the aim of presenting to those who use and gaze in wonder at historic buildings the artistic and human vision that such buildings possess. The foundations of the conservation of historic buildings are established by legislation through the listing and programming of buildings, through normal controls and documentation and through urban planning and conservation procedures. The laws used for the preservation of historic buildings are set out in all legislation under which a national inventory of historic buildings includes lists and schedules of old defense buildings. Under the Antiquities Act 1976, a historic building or monument of at least 100 years old may be listed or gazetted by the Government through the Department of Museums to provide advocacy and support for preservation and conservation (Kamal et al ., 2008). heritage buildings in Malaysia use easily sourced building materials locally such as wood, brick, plaster and stone. Examples of historic buildings in Malaysia are government, institutional and commercial offices, mosques, churches, palaces, clock towers, prisons, residences, schools, hotels, railway stations, forts and monuments.
