Hills Like White ElephantsHemingway was known for writing very little with much underlying meaning. Most of his work is more or less based on dialogue. In “Hills Like White Elephants” we have a brief introduction of the scenario and then the dialogue between Jig and the American. This short story does not provide any clues as to what is actually being said by the main characters, but the tone, setting, and symbolism play an important role in explaining the situation at hand and what Hemingway was trying to convey in this short piece. The scene is set in Barcelona, Spain, in a train station overlooking the hills on the other side of the valley. The main characters wait in a bar for the arrival of the train that will take them to Madrid, Spain. Jig starts by asking her if he can have a drink and the two start drinking and talking about an operation Jig should have. The conversation becomes slightly intense, which becomes evident from the body language and tone emitted. The American tries to calm her nerves by telling her, “It's really a terribly simple operation, Jig,” the man said. “It's not an operation at all.” (Hemingway) Although it seems like the American is trying to be supportive, the situation changes when Jig responds. After carefully reading the story, you discover that the operation is actually an abortion. At first glance you think the American is supportive and trying to calm Jig's nerves, but this later changes when you read Jig's reactions to what she is told. An argument blossoms and causes Jig to step away, look at the scenery, and dwell on the beauty. This then transitions to the end of the piece where the American takes the luggage to the end of the tracks because their train would be arriving shortly......middle of the paper......he would have the baby and he' I'll stay here for a little, but I think his departure is inevitable. The American has already made it clear that his happiness will be better determined after the operation, so he clearly won't be really happy if she has the baby. In life we have to compromise, but that doesn't mean we have to compromise our thoughts, beliefs or aspirations to please another. I think this is what Hemingway was trying to achieve. He wrote a very subtle but meaningful piece and touches on what people really go through in life. When you sit here and analyze the story, your imagination takes over and really makes you take your own personal experiences and connect them to the story. Your personal experiences can ultimately leave you with a story that you can fully understand and understand the emotions coming from the characters.
