Topic > The Role of Religion in the Development of America

Religion is and will likely always be one of the most controversial topics in our world. There have been so many historical events, debates, uprisings, movements and contributing roles because of religion. Some say that without religion people would have nothing to believe in. Others say that if there were no religion, most of our problems that have occurred and are occurring would not even occur. For me, I think religion is what countries live by. While we don't necessarily have a "religion" in our government, we have the freedom to practice religion and the right to speak about it. Honestly, I feel that religion has played a hugely positive role in the development of America, even if there have been some minor obstacles that we have had to overcome. For starters, the role of religion in the colonization of our new world has been enormous. It was the main reason why most people ventured to this part of the world. Many people in England were intolerant of religion and didn't like it. With all the disease and famine going on, they believed that God wanted them to venture into this new land to be safe and secure in their lives. Others simply wanted to bring knowledge of their God to the natives, to spread their religion as far as possible. Once they arrived in the New World, things were more tolerable than in England. In the beginning many religious groups naturally distanced themselves from each other, but after a while there were so many communities with all different types of religions, and I think this was a positive outcome for this New World. I think without the religious tolerance that each group has afforded each other, our world would not even have gotten to the point where 100 years have passed... middle of paper... mixed with war. All in all, religion has played a vital role in our American history. Religion was the primary reason English settlers came to the New World. From helping Americans move towards revolution against Great Britain to being used in everyday Americans during the Civil War, religion will always be an important part of any world issue. I think what we can learn from all this information is that religion will never be left out of any issue, no matter how much we want it to. We are taught that we cannot always listen to what others tell us about religion, but we must learn, read, and write it ourselves to fully understand it. Religion will never be excluded from political or economic matters and will always be the backbone of this nation. Without religion we would not have the nation we have today.
