In Mr. Spaceman by Robert Olen Butler, an extraterrestrial visits Earth on a mission. He's running out of time, but his earthly wife, Edna Bradshaw, helps him along the way. Edna is a former hairdresser. She is about 40 years old and has large breasts. It has a lot of old-fashioned southern traits. The alien's name cannot be pronounced by Earthlings; so Edna gives him the name Desi. Desi is a very empathetic creature. His in-depth study of media and pop culture leads him to speak in slogans, idioms and clichés. It has no lips, hair, nose or ears. It has large cat-shaped eyes and 8 toes on each foot and hand. His species is telepathic and has the power to induce sleep and oblivion. At the turn of the millennium, Desi kidnaps a casino bus with 12 people, near Lake Charles, Louisiana. In this group there are 7 men and 5 women. The driver is Henry Gillette. He is homosexual and has a gray ponytail and sideburns. There are a total of four pairs. Jared and Citrus are in their early twenties and wear body jewelry. Mary and Lucky Wynn are Vietnamese. The other two couples are Viola and Arthur Stackhouse and Misty and Digger. Then there's Hudson, an African-American Harvard graduate in a suit and tie. The other two passengers are Claudia and Trey, a devoted gambler. Most of the story takes place in Desi's spaceship, before “Y2K.” Desi makes an effort to understand humanity. He was sent by his family with orders to reveal himself on New Year's Eve. Desi addresses what it means to be human; he is perplexed by language, dreams, and other human aspects. Doniger argues that by comparing myths we can understand them better. This novel was very similar to the story of Jesus Christ. The first four words... in the center of the paper... because they are very strong. He feels their emotions when he holds their voices inside him. In a way, he's like a shaman. He has a listening ability like no other, as he tries to connect emotions with words and understand. Edna Bradshaw is an archetypal mother. She is thoughtful. She is a great host and constantly cares about others. At one point she feels a maternal void after taking care of Citrus. Desi fits the role of Carol Pearson's magician archetype. He shows compassion and joy to everyone he meets. It comes from species that “eat no sentient thing (Butler 197).” His mission is to reveal himself to a huge crowd to make them understand that Earth is not alone. In proving that other life exists, he hopes that the selfish human population can begin to cooperate. He wants to put an end to the social constraints that prevent us from being united. He says: “You are one people
