The Mexican Drug Cartel is made up of many different cartels, but the main one is the Sinaloa Cartel. The Sinaloa Cartel is one of the most dangerous cartels in Mexico, it is also the most optimistic cartel in Mexico, they will commit to their projects to a large extent. The leader of the Sinaloa Cartel is Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, believed to be one of the most powerful drug lords in the world. There aren't many organizations trying to stop the cartels other than the DEA which stands for Drug Enforcement Administration. The drug cartel is involved in drug smuggling in many parts of the world, but especially in the United States, as they share borders and are the closest place to bring drugs. Mexico also became the main route for Colombian cocaine to the United States” (Bates). According to Bates, when the Guadalajara leader was arrested in 1989, the remaining leaders of the group, including a young Guzman, split the trafficking routes, creating the Sinaloa, Juarez and Tijuana cartels. Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, 56, is responsible for half of the illegal narcotics imported into the United States each year. “El Chapo,” meaning dachshund, is believed to be the most powerful drug lord in the world. In 1993 El Chapo was arrested and was believed to have escaped in a laundry truck in 2001. Sinaloa has become the largest drug trafficking organization in Mexico. El Chapo supplies eighty percent of the drugs that enter the United States, mostly into Chicago. People say that El Chapo controls Sinaloa's drug operations by hiding somewhere in the mountains of Durango.
