I am pursuing my undergraduate degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Pre-Medicine. I hope to move on to medical school once I graduate. After taking the Strong Interest Inventory I learned that I am investigative, social and conventional; I learned that my two main areas of interest are science and medical science; and I learned that a doctor and a chemist are some of my top ten occupations. After learning all this, it confirmed that pursuing a medical degree was the right choice for me. If getting into medical school doesn't work out, I plan to get a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering. The reason I chose this as my backup plan is because it requires many of the same skills that a doctor would need. Chemical engineers must possess adequate problem solving and critical thinking skills to be successful (“Essential Skills”). These are skills that are taught from a young age but take an incredibly long time to master. These skills were present in my High Interest Inventory as among my most important themes. All these things pointed to a Masters in Chemical Engineering because I like chemistry. I've been lucky enough to find a backup plan that I'm happy with, even though my goal is still to get into medical school. There are several skills that I will need to develop to be successful as a doctor. Doctors typically have “a concern for people, a curious mind, an interest in people, a rational approach, an open mind, imagination, determination and humility” (“Doctors”). These skills are essential to being successful and are things I need to work on. During the course of this lesson I have already begun to develop some of these skills. ...... half of the paper ...... to help me understand people and their way of working. I could also take two semesters of language so that I have the knowledge if the situation arises while working in a hospital. I currently volunteer at the Mayo Clinic; This way I am developing practical, clinical experience that will help me determine whether being a doctor is the appropriate choice for me. It will also help me make connections with people currently working in the medical field. I will volunteer the entire four years I attend UNF.Works Cited "Physicians: Skills Required."
