Additionally, children are provided opportunities to discover and develop their skills and knowledge through real-life experiences, which creates opportunities for authentic learning in multiple learning areas such as science, mathematics and literacy (MacNaughton, 2010 ). This therefore creates an interdisciplinary environment and not a prescribed environment with specific subjects. For an integrated curriculum to be successful and comprehensive, teachers must be able to identify ongoing learning as it will occur at different levels, for example with intentional teaching, the teacher expects children to extend their skills in a certain way through a certain activity thus resulting in a specific result. As well as Te Wāriki, being supported by sociocultural theories is supported by Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory. His ecological model is a good example of integrating social systems and influencing children to make sense of their world. The five systems in the model have a ripple effect that affects each system, regardless of where the wave began. The Micro and the Meso are the two most influential where they see the child and his immediate environment such as family and education having the largest and most significant role.
