During the 1800s, Gabriel Prosser, a blacksmith in Richmond, Virginia, devised a plan that would free himself and others from slavery. Prosser and a group of his followers would have obtained armor and weapons and then tried to conquer the city, thus freeing them from slavery. Unfortunately before they could execute the plan, he and some of his followers were put to death, an event that would prove to be a catalyst for the revolt. After their deaths and many more to come, African slaves then attempted to escape their plantations or their masters and fled for freedom. Slaves from the southern states fled to the north just to try to have the same opportunities as whites. This is because, in 1803, the state of New Jersey passed a law providing for the gradual abolition of slavery. All states north of the Mason-Dixon Line allowed the abolition of slavery in their territories. This form of apartheid did not accommodate slaves well at the time of numerous mistreatments and poverty-stricken families struggled to survive. The government did not help but only contributed to the slave issue in question. With the end of the twenty-year ban on congressional action, Thomas Jefferson, who didn't like the idea of slavery, initiates Congress to criminalize the slave trade because it is a violation of human rights, which has been going on for so long. Quickly, Jefferson got Congress to outlaw the international slave trade with the Act Prohibiting the Importation of Slaves. Importing or exporting slaves will be a federal crime, but all that doesn't stop some white people obsessed with having a slave, so illegal immigrants have become a way to make a quick buck for some people. Little by little, as the year goes by, the fall of the African Ame...... center of the card ......ssed. Southerners separately end the movement toward disunion but are angered by Northern resistance to enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act. Northerners are appalled by the possible growth of slavery in the Southwest and by the stronger fugitive slave law that calls for all U.S. citizens to help return slaves who try to escape. As events unfold, California strategically sends a group of pro-slavery representatives and senators to Congress until the Civil War begins. In conclusion, the union, a group of twenty-three states, primarily wanted the abolition of slavery and the maintenance of the Confederate states. from taking control of the nation. If slavery were abolished, it would disrupt the Southern economy, ultimately defeating it. The Confederate fought for the right of states to govern themselves and was not concerned about the repercussions at the national level.
