Topic > Renewable Energy: Solar Energy - 1041

Renewable energy is energy that can be used over and over again. It never runs out. It's also better for the environment. I think renewable energy is definitely an option for South Africa in the near future. There are many different forms of renewable energy and I will talk about the forms of renewable energy that would be most suitable in South Africa. Solar energy would probably be the most successful form of renewable energy in South Africa. The reason I say this is because South Africa is a country that has a reputation for a sunny climate. This is true as South Africa is the fifth sunniest country in the world1. There are various ways to collect the sun's rays to convert them into electricity. The most effective way to harvest energy just for your family would probably be the solar water heating method. The way it works uses the sun's heat to heat a liquid inside the cylinders. The liquid then turns into a gas which provides energy to the generator which creates electricity. The solar water heating method is more successful than the photovoltaic method because the photovoltaic method converts light directly into electricity. This means that the photovoltaic method cannot store electricity and can only work when there is sunlight2. So, for the solar water heating method, if it were a cloudy, rainy day, you would probably still have enough electricity to power all your essential requirements since the electricity would be stored. A solar water heating system costs around R20000, so initially the cost is high but in the long term it is very efficient as the electricity supply is free. The government could also consider investing in a solar oven. This is a massive collection... middle of paper... that invests lightning in electricity in the near future. In conclusion, I believe that we should continue to use the rest of the available fossil fuels, but governments around the world should start considering only the use of renewable energy. We could eventually store fossil fuels and use them as a reserve because not all forms of renewable energy are completely reliable. But that said, we should also learn to conserve our energy and do little things like turn off the light when you leave your room. While the government won't start considering renewable energy anytime soon, there's nothing stopping you from investing in your own solar geyser or trying to get involved by promoting this recent form of energy. It's good for you because you save money and good for the future of the Earth because it reduces emissions into the Earth's atmosphere.
