Originally a local destination motel called Landa Resort, located along the tree-lined banks of the spring-fed Comal River in the Texas Hill Country, where tubing was a popular way to cool off from the heat during the peak of a hottest Texas day. In 1966, Bob and Billye Henry and their children envisioned what would become the world's first water resort and this country's most popular water park. The resort was called the "Disney land of water parks" with the original park opening on August 2, 1979; Henry's vision of expanding their motel's water recreation became a reality. The initial attraction was a six-foot road...... middle of paper ...... the world's tallest uphill section of roller coaster). The exact height has yet to be released, it is estimated to be taller than Niagara Falls and will reach speeds of up to 65 miles per hour. Because safety concerns are at the forefront of all decisions made at any park, this attraction, like others before it, will be extensively tested before opening to the public later this spring. Many who have not visited one of the parks have heard of or come across the Schlitterbahn New Braunfels or one of the other properties in the media because it has been featured on the Travel Channel and NBC's Today Show. While not a direct competitor with other conventional amusement or theme parks, Schlitterbahn offers an array of experiences and opportunities for all and at this level has become a contender for recreational and vacation revenue that should not be underestimated.
