Introduction Many claims have been made to try to define leadership. The most commonly accepted one is that leadership is the action of providing guidance, direction, authority and management in a social context or in an organization. There are many aspects of leadership which include leading a group, having authority over an organization, governing or administering, and being dominant, among others. This article will analyze two Irish newspaper articles exploring these aspects and requirements of leadership. The Articles The first article reviewed was written by Breda O'Brien in The Irish Times. It's about the Minister of Education not doing the right thing about implementing change. In the article he asks the question of whether leaders should implement change at a time when there are no resources to implement the proposed change. The Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, is said to have failed to consider the preparation of change implementers to implement the proposed changes in his Junior Cycle reform proposal. The proposal aims to shift education from an exam-oriented system to one that uses a toolkit to assess and aid in the learning process. Teachers are faced with the problem of suddenly introducing a new approach to the teaching and learning process. These same teachers have suffered pay cuts and many other demoralizing issues. The writer argues that teachers, who will implement the change, feel weakened, demoralized and tired. However, she is quick to point out that teachers are not against the plan because they have seen the limitations of the current system. The article highlights flaws in the management of the plan. The formation is…at the heart of the paper…seeks to combat that opposition. It is clear that questions about Gerry cannot disappear, but they will increase. Many are anxious to see what step Gerry will take, whether he will retain the leadership and probably tear the party apart or destroy the unity that has taken years to achieve, or do the noble thing and leave office. This article implies that leadership must be visionary so that the leader is able to know when he is no longer useful to the organization and pass on the leadership to new people who will lead the organization to better successes.
