Jack the Ripper is perhaps the most famous serial murder case in the world. Even after more than one hundred and twenty years, the case is widely discussed, speculated on and mulled over (Jones, Jack the Ripper 1888). Much of the intrigue about the case lies in the fact that, to this day, it is unsolved. Questions still remain about the case. What was Jack the Ripper's true identity? What was the actual number of victims? The known murders attributed to Jack the Ripper took place between August 7, 1888 and November 10, 1888 (Jack the Ripper Biography). There were five known victims; four suspected prostitutes and another woman, all severely sectioned. Four of the women had their throats slit and their organs removed, in one case a kidney and in the other the reproductive organs. The murder of the other victim, Elizabeth Stride, is said to have been stopped (Cohen). Other murders were unofficially attributed to Jack the Ripper, on the assumption that he had left London. Soon after the last murder in London, there was one in the United States that exactly matched the operational method, the exact mutilations even the Jack the Ripper murders. Other people say that the murders in South Africa also corresponded to and bore his "signature" (Cohen). One victim, Mary Nichols, was a 41-year-old prostitute. She had been thrown out of the accommodation before because she didn't have the money she needed, and had stated that she would return with the money (Jones, photo of Jack the Ripper). She was discovered at nearly 3:40 a.m. on August 31, 1888. Upon inspection, her skin was found to still be warm and it was thought she could still breathe shallowly.
