In Shakespeare's time, he was known to have used up to approximately 29,000 unique words in his works. He alone developed nearly 3,000 words in the English language. Shakespeare wrote vulgar, comical, hateful, abominable, and cruel insults that his audience can appreciate and identify with. Shakespeare's insults were usually hidden in a cleverly produced manner. People today say that if Shakespeare had not evolved and demonstrated mastery of such an abundant amount of literature, he would not have had much impact on the English language or literary works today. Shakespeare has been called the "Man of Words" because his ability to produce such popular vocabulary and vocabulary-intensive style made him something of a writing god in his time.
