Topic > The Humanities: Culture, Continuity, and Change

In our textbook, The Humanities: Culture, Continuity, and Change, Henry M. Sayre states, “A culture encompasses the values and behaviors shared by a group of people , developed over time, and passed down from generation to generation." (Sayre, 2015) This quote resonated with me, on so many levels, after writing this article. I hope you enjoy it. Housed in a mid-19th century reclaimed Greek church, Charleston's Karpeles Manuscript Library is one of a handful across the United States. These libraries highlight findings drawn from the world's largest accumulation of private original copying, incorporating accounts of prominent craftsmen, arrangers, adventurers, researchers, political pioneers, religious figures, and other socially and generally critical individuals. The display in each area changes four times a year. On one visit you might see letters composed by Eva Perón or John Adams – and on another visit you might see religious tracts by John Calvin or Martin Luther; or perhaps logical studies of any semblance of Galileo, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, or Albert Einstein; or musical arrangements by artists such as Ludwig von Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or Richard Wagner. Likewise shown are a couple of ancient Egyptian rarities collected by David and Marsha Karpeles. It is significant that the teacher is also one of the attractions of the library. He is friendly and knowledgeable, as well as a true Southern man of honor with a genuine gift for storytelling. His stories are enlightening and also fascinating. The library, which offers free on-site parking, is located on the edge of Charleston's architecturally significant area, in an area that is rapidly gentrifying, with great restaurants and bars within..... . half of the sheet ......esis of Relativity, a note made by Charles Lindbergh, the first printing of the Ten Precepts from Gutenberg's Book of Scriptures, the Bill of Rights, Lincoln's Liberation Act, John Hancock's beginning of the letter for the Affirmation of Freedom, Very Rare Letter of Christopher Columbus. George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation and most of the documents of the Spanish Naval Force, including most of the correspondence between Lord Phillip and his powers. Karpeles estimates that he and his wife have acquired more than a million documents over the past 30 years. It's fascinating just to stand in a room and watch some of them. The grandiose 1850s Greek Revival style church that houses the gallery is justified independently of the visit alone, but added to that are the precious testimonies of the compositions inside that make it perfect for those genuine about history. This was an enjoyable visit.
