My Scarlet Letter project consists of a mannequin dressed in a beautiful dress. Under the dress I tattooed the letter A on the mannequin's chest and also drew a tramp stamp. The letter A symbolizing affliction is made up of nine Chinese characters, each with a symbolic meaning and the tramp stamp is the Chinese character meaning tempter. Building the project took a long time, but it wasn't outside of my skills or hobbies. Money, however, was a concern for me. Luckily I was able to purchase a used mannequin for twenty-five dollars at a warehouse. Since I had no experience with Chinese characters, I was wary of drawing them without some practice, so I had to make several drafts on paper before drawing them on the mannequin. When you compare my design to my proposal, you may notice a noticeable difference. I initially thought of creating a cavity in the mannequin's chest and placing a symbolic object there, but several complications arose. First, the warehouse only had mannequins made of fiberglass instead of plastic, which meant I would have to use a drill instead of a knife to create the cavity, and I wasn't confident in my skills with a drill. Secondly, it wouldn't have been fun for me. Yes, the idea of using a mannequin appealed to me, but everything else seemed bland. On the contrary, ever since I was little I wanted a meaningful tattoo even though I'm not allowed to have one. Plus, I love drawing, which you've probably noticed from all the doodles I do in class. Third, the idea of drilling a hole in a chest and creating a box lends itself to many tasks that, personally, I find tedious. Although it took me five to six hours to draft Ch......half of the paper......the item was quite time consuming, but it was not beyond my capabilities or my hobbies. For example, the warehouse only had fiberglass dummies, which meant I would have to use a drill to create the cavity. Something I'm not sure about. Mostly, though, I wouldn't have liked it as much as I did with this one.
