What are heroes? Are they special human deities or normal everyday people who help society in a positive way? When you look at Homer's Odyssey, one distinct character appears to be heroic: Odysseus. Although Odysseus is arrogant and boastful throughout the epic, he pays the price by having to escape the Cyclopes and the wrath of Poseidon. On the other hand he is a good man who has the following attributes: leadership, loyalty and perseverance. In ancient times, it was no child's play to command a legion of 500 or more warriors and, above all, win a battle. However, Odysseus had managed to do just that at the Battle of Troy: “We are Achaeans from Troy, driven from our true course by winds from every direction across the great gulf of the open sea, heading home, the wrong way. , on the wrong paths. Therefore we have come" (Homer 9,259-261). Since everyone is happy and overjoyed with every victory achieved, Odysseus is thrilled and overjoyed and proudly greets that he fought for Achaia and won. After a series of dead ends, traps and encounters with God, they finally make it back to Ithaca. So, since Odysseus is able to command an army of 500 warriors and win battles, he is therefore considered a leader. Imagine there's a 1600 meter race going on, it's a four lap race and it's starting to finish with 200 meters left. ; no matter how much it hurts, the runner must keep going and fight. When Poseidon, the god of the sea, attempts to destroy Odysseus' ship, and succeeds, Odysseus preserves the entire story, not letting the fact that his ship was missing demotivate him from returning to Ithaca. "Of all the creatures that breathe and walk on the earth there is nothing more defenseless than a man, of all that... in the middle of the paper... all the winds broke out.'' (10.28-36, 46-47 ).After struggling and sailing for 9 days and nights without stopping, Ulysses finally reaches Ithaca, but the impatient companions who have been waiting for Ulysses for 26 years greeted him and welcomed him with grandeur. This not only shows that people still recognize him, but they are still as loyal to him as they always were and knew he would return to Ithaca, so they never lost hope in him Based on his definition of loyalty, he plays an important role in Odysseus' life and helps shape the Odyssey "Moreover, we must not even risk the adventure alone, for the heroes of all time are here before us." , expresses the true essence of a hero. Odysseus would be a great hero because he is loyal, has leadership qualities and survives hardships.
