Smith is an 89-year-old woman who was admitted to residential aged care a year ago because she required nursing home-level care. One morning, while I was rounding up her medicines, I found her very distressed and crying. My immediate response was to calm Ms. Smith and start a conversation about her concerns. Mrs Smith stated that she did not sleep all night due to pain in her lower abdomen and the urge to go to the bathroom all night to urinate. Her main concern was that she didn't want to eat or drink because that would force her to get up and keep going to the bathroom. She also expressed her dissatisfaction with the dinner she had been served the previous day and felt that her special diverticulitis diet was not monitored by healthcare personnel. Smith's past medical history includes arthritis, diverticulitis, hypertension and arterial fibrillation. His current medications are felodipine, quinapril, aspirin, and warfarin. She is also prescribed Panadol tablet as needed. He has no medications or food allergies and is very compliant in taking it
