Hip hop dance was important to African American culture because it allowed them to create their own culture, their own music, their own style. When you watch Flex is Kings, there are many young people in one video demonstrating what hip hop dance culture has evolved into in the 21st century. They are a contemporary urban dance movement. You can see the emotion and “seriousness” in their movements. Hip hop dance is the life of these people ("Flex Is Kings"). Flex is a type of street dance, sometimes called "bone breaking" due to their movements appearing as if a person has no bones or is literally breaking them to create the skin jarring dances they create ("Flexing "). Dancers like Storyboard P have mastered the art of flexing. In one of his interviews he states that when you dance you reveal who you are ("Storyboard P"). African Americans rely on this particular art form to process how, as a race, we have been able to showcase our culture to mainstream America. The mainstream is basically a majority of people (Mainstream). Hip hop, however, has transformed into mainstream culture and thus lost itself. “Black culture, which has a long tradition of fighting against (and at the same time collaborating with) dominant white culture, has turned the corner into the 21st century with what seems in some ways to be an unequivocal victory. Young L 'America now embraces hip-hop as the most representative pop music genre of its time. So why does that victory seem strange: not exactly empty, but a little haunted?'
